   film director, actor, stage manager
   Born in sète, Jean Vilar decided on a theatrical career after a meeting with charles DULLiN.He received favorable revues for his first productions (Synge, Strindberg, molière) and, after the success of his productions of T. s. Eliot's Murder in the Cathedral (1945), he established the Festival d'art dramatique, the first Festival d'Avignon, and he was named director of the Théâtre national populaire (TNP). Vilar was drawn to the beautifully proportioned courtyard of the Palais des Papes at Avignon and felt that it would be a perfect site for an open-air public celebration of theater performances. He also led an ambitious theater group that worked with the public through his Association des Amis du Théâtre populaire and through the journal Bref. under his direction, the TNP performed for nearly 5 million spectators.
